Outlets planning to provide plastic bags to customers in the port town will now have to shell out Rs 48,000 annually, after registering themselves with the Mormugao Municipal Council. “All manufacturers, importers, stockists, distributors and sellers are hereby informed that they are required to comply with provisions under existing rules, which stipulate that the thickness of plastic bags shall not be less than 50 microns,” said Fernandes.
Fernandes added that shopkeepers and street vendors willing to provide plastic bags for dispensing any commodity should register with the MMC.

The registered shopkeepers shall display at prominent places that plastic carry bags would be given on payment.
